Notorious B.I.G., an American rapper who died in 1997, but still has a net worth of $167 million.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, as the only child of Voletta Wallace, a Jamaican preschool teacher, and Selwyn George Latore, a Jamaican welder and politician, 20 years after his death, he is still one of the richest rappers in the world.

Two years after his birth, his father left the family and his mother had to work two jobs to support him.

He spent his childhood in Clinton Hill section of Brooklyn, near border of Bedford-Stuyvesant.

While attending at Queen of All Saints Middle School, he excelled in classes and even won several awards as an English student.

He got his nickname Big thanks to his overweight size by age 10, and according to him started dealing drugs at around 12 years old.

Before moving at another school, he attended the Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School.

After that, he went to George Westinghouse Career and Technical Education High School, where other famous rappers attended.

As a teenager he started rapping, and used to entertain people on the streets and perform with local groups the Old Gold Brothers and the Techniques.

Growing up, police arrested him several times; one time with a weapon charge in Brooklyn, and other time for dealing crack cocaine.

Upon his time in jail, he made a demo tape under the name Biggie Smalls, with no serious intent of getting a recording deal.

But New York-based DJ Mister Cee promoted it, and the editor of The Source heard the demo.

In 1992, The Source featured him on their Unsigned Hype column dedicated to aspiring rappers. Then he got a recording deal.

Sean Combs, the record producer of Uptown Records A&R heard the tape and arranged a meeting with him.

Sean immediately signed him and made an appearance on label mates, Heavy D & the Boyz’ “A Buncha Niggas” (from the album Blue Funk). Soon after, Sean left the record and started a new label and Wallace followed him.

He had his breakthrough with the remix of Mary J. Blige’s single Real Lover, under the pseudonym The Notorious B.I.G.

Today, after a bunch of collaborations with various artists, he remains one of the greatest rappers in the world. He died in 1997 due to an unknown assailant in a drive-by shooting in LA.
