The most expensive pet fish is the Asian Arowana, also known as the dragon fish. It is believed that this amazing fish can bring good luck and prosperity because of its red color and coin-like scales.
One woman wanted to see the wonder with her own eyes, and risked terrorists, headhunters and the ‘fish mafia’ to be able to see the fish in its natural habitat.
That woman is named Emily Voigt, and she had no idea that she would be pulled in a shady world of smuggling when began investigating the Asian arowana, the most expensive aquarium fish.
She began her quest for the fish and traveled to 15 countries, encountered headhunters and civil war just to follow the trail of the Dragon Fish.
Emily discovered the lure of the wild, and the dangers of obsession, and it has told the story in her book ‘The Dragon Behind the Glass: A True Story of Power, Obsession, and the World’s Most Coveted Fish.’
But let’s get back to the story of that fish most of us aren’t familiar with- the arowana aka the dragon fish.
This type of fish is a tropical freshwater fish from Southeast Asia that grows three feet long in the wild.
With the size of a snowshoe, the Dragon Fish is a fierce predator dating back to the age of the dinosaurs.
Boasting large, metallic scales like coins, whiskers that jut from its chin, and a undulate like paper dragons you see in a Chinese New Year’s parade, this fish is quite a wonder of the world.

Because of its looks, the fish has spawned the belief that it can bring good luck and prosperity, which is why it has become a popular aquarium fish.
While on her travelers, Emily attended the Aquarama International Fish Competition, she has seen ten rare exemplars that were under heavy guard. The highest price for a single fish is $300,000, which was paid by a high-ranking member of the Chinese Communist Party.
As you can understand, it is illegal to import arowana into the U.S., but in recent years almost two million of them have been moved across international borders.
They grow up in only the farms in Southeast Asia that are made like highly-security prisons with concrete walls protected by guard dogs, watchtowers and barbed wire.
Just a few Dragon Fish survive in the wild, deep in the jungles of Borneo. The rest of them are raised on fish farms, like the one belonging to Kenny Yap’s Qian Hu Corporation in Singapore.
