The Weeknd is a Canadian singer, songwriter and record producer. and his current net worth is $92 million.

Born in Toronto, Ontario, as the only child of Makkonen and Samra Tesfaye, and raised in the neighborhood of Scarborough, Ontario.

Growing up, his mother took several jobs to support the family, often taking odd jobs as a nurse and caterer. She also went to high school to learn English.

Later on, his father left the family, letting his maternal grandmother to take care of him.

Thanks to this he became fluent in Amharic, with the Semitic language as his first language.

His grandmother used to take him to services at the Ethiopian Orthodox church. He started smoking marijuana at 11 years old, and later moved to more heavy drugs.

He got his nickname because of his high school dropout status; although producer Jeremy Rose claims that the name came from him.

They intended to make the spelling mistake in order to avoid trademark issues with the Canadian band The Weekend.

In 2010, he met producer Jeremy Rose, who had an idea for a dark R&B musical project.

After a failing attempt to pitch the idea to musician Curtis Santiago, the producer played one of his instrumentals for The Weeknd, who started to freestyle over it. From there the duo started to working on an album together.

Jeremy Rose produced three songs, “What You Need”, “Loft Music”, and “The Morning”, including some more which were scrapped.

In 2010, he uploaded several songs to YouTube under his stage name, but his identity remained unknown.

The songs, which drew some attention online, and later included in a blog post from Drake, received coverage from several media outlets.

A year later, he self-released his debut mixtape, House of Balloons.

After the release he went on a tour of Toronto, where he gave his first live performance at the city’s Mod Club venue.

Drake has also seen his first performance, which ran for a total of ninety minutes. Then he approached The Weeknd to offer him a possible musical collaboration.

The Weeknd accompanied Drake on stage on several of his shows, often performing as the opening act.

Their collaboration continued with what later became Take Care, Drake’s multi-platinum Grammy Award winning sophomore studio album.

He contributed to five of the songs on the album, either as a writer or a featured artist.

People still didn’t know who is behind those songs, as he refused to do interviews and communicated only through Twitter.

His second mixtape, Thursday, released on 18 August 2011, had marked his debut.

Released the following year, his third mixtape, after the release of his first ever singles.

His single, Echoes of Silence, released in December 2011, had a lot of critical acclaim.

Thanks to the three of his mixtapes, known as the Balloons Trilogy, he received multiple offers from many record labels.

Before he got the nickname The Weeknd as his stage name, he used to go for The Noise or Kin Kane.

A tour through the United States shortly followed, with a performance at the Coachella Festival, and later he even expanded his tour through Europe.

A year later he signed a deal with Republic Records in a joint venture with his own imprint XO.

Under Republic Records he released the compilation album for the mixtapes, titled Trilogy. The compilation album had great sales and charted four on the US Billboard 100.

From there, many other collaborations and performances at various festivals followed. Three more albums followed just after that, with the last one being Starboy, released in 2016.

In 2017, he appeared on Future’s sixth studio album, as well on the debut single of Nav, who signed by XO.
