8- Tamayo Piece in Pile of Trash
Imagine that! A Tamayo Piece was found in a pile of trash by a NY resident. She came across a painting lying in the trash while walking through Manhattan in 2003.
The finder, Elizabeth Gibson obviously knew nothing about the modern art and decided to take the piece home with her for a closer look.
She had to spend four years trying to find out valuable information or any information about the painting when she finally saw a website that listed it as appeared on Antique Roadshow.
The painting was made by Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo, the same who died in 1991. “Tres Personajes” was painted in 1970 and was previously belonged to an anonymous Huston collector.
But it was stolen while the collector and his wife were moving and was lost ever since.
Upon learning this, Elizabeth turned it in and it went on to sell for over one million dollars.
She received a percentage of the seller fee as well as a $15,000 reward for finding it.
