Born in Evanston, Illinois, he is the son of Lucille, a mail room clerk, and Edward Joseph Murray II, a lumber salesman.
Bill grew up in Wilmette, Illinois, a northern suburb of Chicago, along with his eight siblings.
He spent most of his time reading children’s biographies of American heroes like Kit Carson, Wild Bill Hickok, and Davy Crockett. During his teen years, he attended St. Joseph’s grade school and Loyola Academy.
To fund his education at the Jesuit high school, he used to work as a golf caddy. He also served as the lead singer of a rock band called the Dutch Masters and as a member of his high school and community theater.
Upon graduating, he went to Regis University of Denver, Colorado, where he took pre-medical classes, but dropped out and returned to Illinois.
During this time, the police arrested him at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport for trying to smuggle 10 lb (4.5 kg) of cannabis, which he had allegedly intended to sell.
The police discovered the drugs when he joked to a passenger that he had drugs intended to smuggle.
He received only a probation. To get a fresh start, at the invitation of his brother, he joined The Second City in Chicago, an improvisational comedy troupe.
After he moved to New York City, John Belushi recruited him as a featured player on The National Lampoon Radio Hour.
Thanks to an Off-Broadway version of a Lampoon show, he earned his first television role as a cast member of the ABC’s Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell.
In the same period, another variety show NBC’s Saturday Night premiered and the ABC’s show lasted just one season.
Meanwhile, he worked in LA with the “guerrilla video” commune TVTV on several projects.

He earned a spot on the NBC’s Saturday Night Live for the show’s second season after Chevy Chase left. Murray stayed at SNL for three seasons.
Bill then earned his first leading role in the film Meatballs, which followed after his portrayal of Hunter S. Thompson in Where the Buffalo Roam.
Also, during the same period, he starred in Ghostbusters, which became the highest-grossing film of that year.
After the success of Ghostbusters, he took a role in The Razor’s Edge, filmed before Ghostbusters, but released afterward.
The Razor’s Edge didn’t do so well at the box office and as a result, he took four years off from acting to study philosophy and history at the Sorbonne.
He then returned with films such as Scrooged, and Ghostbusters II. During the early 90s, he made his first and only attempt at directing with Quick Change.
His next films became huge hits, and after winning the Best Supporting Actor award for Rushmore, he decided to try more dramatic roles.
