The Argentine athlete, who plays as a forward for Spanish club FC Barcelona and the Argentina national team, was born in Rosario, Santa Fe as the third of four children of Jorge Messi, a steel factory manager, and Celia Cuccittini, a worker in a magnet manufacturing workshop.
Growing up in a football friendly environment, he started taking interest for the sport from an early age, playing constantly with his older brothers, and his cousins.
When he was only four years old, he was a member of the local club Grandoli, where he was coached by his father, but his earliest influence as a player came from his grandmother Celia, who cheered for him when he was training and matches.
After she died, he was visibly affected by her death, and since then he has celebrated his goals by looking up and pointing to the sky in tribute for her.
He loved football so much and growing up he had plenty of it, with him joining a bunch of clubs and winning several awards. But at the age of ten, his passion, and why not his possible future career was threatened when he was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency.
At the age of 13, he joined the Barcelona’s youth academy, La Masia. During his time at the academy his family arranged a trial with Barcelona.
The first team director he was wanted to sign him right away, but the club hesitated because he was a foreign player and at the time, it was highly unusual for European clubs to sign foreign players.
Later the same year, an ultimatum was given to Barcelona to prove their commitment to the game, and his then team director offered a contract on a paper napkin.
The next year, to be closer to him, his family moved to Barcelona near the club’s stadium. But because he was a foreign player, and due to a transfer conflict, he could only play in friendlies and the Catalan league.
For him football was the only thing that helped him be a part of the team, and without it, the already shy kid, became so quiet that his teammates thought he was mute.
At home, he suffered from homesickness because he was alone with his father in Barcelona, after his mother moved back to Rosario with his siblings.
A year after he enrolled into the academy, he was finally a part of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).
Because he was a member of the RFEF, he was able to play in all competitions, and made a lot of friends among his teammates, including Cesc Fàbregas and Gerard Piqué.
From there his career only went up, with him performing much better than anyone expected. For example, in his first full season he was top scorer with 36 goals in 30 games for the Cadetes A.
After the full season, he receive an offer whether to join Arsenal, his first from a foreign club, or to remain in Barcelona. He chose the last one.
He has been often ranked among the best players in the world, with some considering the greatest of all time.
Messi is also the only footballer in history to win five FIFA Ballon d’Or awards, four of which he won consecutively.
