Tom Ford is an American fashion designer, film director, screenwriter, and film producer and his current net worth is $300 million.

Born in Texas as the son of Shirley Burton and Thomas David Ford, both realtors, he spent most of his childhood in the suburbs of Huston, Texas and in San Marcos.

At 11 years old his family moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico. There he went to St. Michael’s High School.

Later he transferred to Santa Fe Preparatory School, from where he graduated in 1979.

At 16 he went to Bard College at Simon’s Rock, but dropped out almost immediately.

He studied at New York University (NYU) after he moved to New York City, but dropped out a year later to focus on acting in television commercials.

At the New School’s art and design college, Parsons The New School for Design, he started studying interior architecture.

Around that time he used to visit quite often, Studio 54, a club, where he realized he was gay. The club’s glamour would later influence his designs.

Before ending the New School, he spent a year and a half in Paris. There he worked as an intern in Chloe’s press office, where his interest in fashion started to show.

Upon return to New York he finished his last year at The New School, where he studied fashion, but received a degree in architecture.

Despite his lack of experience in fashion, he made a phone call to American designed Cathy Hardwick every day for a month. He hoped that she would hire him at her sportswear company.

Eventually, she agreed to an interview. He got the job and worked there for two years.

After this job, he went to Perry Ellis, where he knew both Robert McDonald, the president, as well as Marc Jacobs, its designer.

Then, after two years, he got bored of working in American fashion, and left.

Around that same time, Italian fashion house Gucci had some financial problems and wanted to strengthen its women’s ready-to-wear presence.

In 1990 the company’s creative director, Dawn Mello hired Ford as brand’s chief women’s ready-to-wear designer.

He and his longtime partner, Richard Buckley, a fashion journalist, moved to Milan.

Upon doing his job so good, his duty at Gucci expanded with him ended up working 11 hours a day.

At one point, Ford became the largest individual shareholder of Gucci stock and options. By 1999, the house, which had been almost bankrupt when Ford joined, had a value of more than $4 billion.

Gucci acquired the house of Yves Saint Laurent (YSL), the same year, and he became the Creative Director of that label as well.

During his time as creative director for YSL, Ford nonetheless won numerous Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards, and managed to pull the company into mainstream.

In 2004 when Ford left Gucci Group it had a value of $10 billion. In 2006, he founded his line of menswear, beauty, sunglasses, and accessories, named after him, Tom Ford.

Dominico De Sole became chairman of the Tom Ford label.
